What site work does a new building need?
Clearing, grading to a level pad with drainage away from it, the driveway or the access, utility trenches for water, power and septic or sewer, and any retaining that the slope needs. It is done before the building starts and it is a real share of the cost on a sloped or wooded lot. A building on a badly graded pad has water problems for its whole life.
Do I need a retaining wall for my building site?
If the pad is cut into a slope, usually yes — to hold the cut and to keep the fill from moving. Walls over four feet or supporting a structure are engineered. Grading that avoids the wall is cheaper when the lot allows it, and that is decided at the site evaluation.
