Does a pole barn need a permit and a foundation?
A permit in most counties, and the posts are its foundation — set in concrete below frost depth, which is what carries the building and resists wind. A concrete slab is optional and is poured after the frame if the barn will be a shop or a garage. Agricultural buildings on farm land are sometimes exempt from permits; that is checked for the parcel.
How big a barn or shop can I build?
As big as the lot, the setbacks and the budget allow. Post-frame buildings are made in standard bay widths and can be long; clear spans of forty to sixty feet are routine for equipment and arenas.
